Jamf Connect - Lab Computers and Password Changes

Student password resets bring a minor change to a student’s next login on a CTE Lab computer on Jamf Connect.

What is happening?

A computer/local account is created the first time a user logs into a Jamf Connect computer. Bethel Portal credentials are used to create the login at that time.   When a user changes their Portal password, however, it does not automatically change the password on the computer.

What does this look like?

When the Bethel Portal password and local computer password no longer match, the login behavior on the computer changes.  Students will be presented with two login screens, the first one for the portal and the second one for the computer.  This can cause confusion when they’ve previously only experienced a single login.

What steps are needed?

Any one of these options will get students up and running quickly.

  1. Student uses their new password on the Portal screen (1st login) and their old password on the computer screen (2nd login). Then they can update their password on the computer:
    1. Go to System Settings > Users and Groups, click the (i) next to their name, and choose Change Password.
    2. The new password should be the current Portal password.
  2. Use a Different Computer - Logging into a computer they haven't used before will create a new account with their current Portal credentials.
  3. The teacher can make the password change - As a computer admin, the teacher can make the password change with the student present by logging in with the admin credentials.
  4. Submit a Ticket or call us at 6767 - Technology can quickly remove the "old" account(s) remotely and then the student would create a new account the next time they log in.

We are collaborating with our MDM provider with the goal of eliminating this workflow in the future, though a specific timeline for changes has not yet been established. We appreciate your understanding while navigating the student password changes.
