Google Authenticator is a mobile application developed by Google that provides an additional layer of security for online accounts. It enables two-factor authentication (2FA) by generating time-based one-time passwords (TOTPs) on your mobile device.

The primary purpose of Google Authenticator is to strengthen the security of your accounts by requiring not only something you know (password) but also something you have (your mobile device such as phone or iPad) to authenticate your identity. Even if someone obtains your password, they would still need the time-sensitive code from the Google Authenticator app to gain access to your account.

When you set up Google Authenticator for an online service that supports it, such as the Bethel Portal, you link your account to the app. Once linked, the app generates a unique six-digit code that changes every 30 seconds. This code is used along with your regular username and password when logging in to the associated service.

Google Authenticator uses an industry-standard algorithm called the Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) algorithm to generate the codes. It doesn't rely on an internet connection for generating the codes, which means you can still use the app even if you're offline.
